going to the castle and we're gonna get married

day 16: sunday
- woke up at 10 after sleeping for ELEVEN hours, it was heaven
- got ready at the hostel and worked out a game plan. it was our first rainy day of the trip, which was disconcerting, but we decided to everything anyway
- walked down from the hostel to piazza del plebliscito which had all these columns around a church in the middle. we tried going in the church, which was beautiful, but mass was about to start and we peaced
- got lunch (more pizza!) near the piazza. it started raining pretty hard, so we decided to order dessert which was delicious! the only dark spot on our lunch was that they made us pay tip on top of the bill (taking advantage of the tourists, grrr) the meal cost nothing compared to rome though, so we couldn't complain
- walked down to one of the 2 castles in naples. it was closed though, which was disappointing
- walked along the water which was, like the rest of naples, a bit run down but still fairly nice especially considering it was raining. we got to the other castle and that one was closed too! so frustrating!
- walked back up through town to the big duomo, which was really nice but also closed. we sat on the steps for a while, trying to figure out what to do, when suddenly a big tour group walked up and went inside. so we snuck in behind them, and it was awesome. unfortunately, i proposed a family photo on the steps of the duomo and, in the confusion of grabbing all our cameras, dylan accidentally dropped mine down the stone steps and the lense got bent. of course that would happen to me. the camera itself still works fine and it doesn't seem too badly broken so hopefully the ACCENT center can refer me to someone who can look at it and fix it! (fingers crossed!)
- walked back to the hostel and discovered there was a train earlier than the one we were planning to take, so we rushed down to the station and found seats. it was much more crowded so caryn and i had to sit separately from dylan, brandon & joe... oh well. by the time we got to rome the train was so busy that there were people standing EVERYWHERE. i wrote all 12 of my postcards and read book 5 in livy, so i was quite pleased with my productivity. book 5 was actually exciting, rome got taken over briefly by the gauls and, in the words of folke lindahl, it got quite sexy.
- took the 64 bus and 8 tram back to our apartments, showered, at buttered noodles and went to bed relatively early... at least considering my terrible sleeping habits for the last week.
